Sunlight is each reading as a share of what that same sensor reads under a clear sky at this sun angle. Under about 55% is solid overcast; over about 72% is direct sun. Once the sun is too low to judge that, and always at Campo Lopez, the raw reading is shown instead.
Why three
A single sensor can tell you it is gray. A line of them can tell you where the gray ends. When Rancho Santa Fe is in sun and the beach is not, the edge is somewhere in between and usually on its way to the coast; when all three are under cloud the layer is deep and the wait is longer. How bright the overcast is at each one is a direct read on how thick the deck is, which is the best single clue to when it will break.
